Episode #38: Friends Reunited

In our first episode of 2020, and our first one together FOR AGES, Jenni and Marc talk about what we've been up to. We chat about Jen's NaNoWriMo achievement, what else we've done over the end of 2019 and what books and other sources of inspiration we've found lately. And then we talk a lot about puddings.

Listen to us on

iTunes
Stitcher
Spotify
Acast

or right here...

We're back, bright and breezy for a new decade of writing talk! In this episode we discuss Jenni's approach to NaNoWriMo, the motivational techniques and how it feels to actually finish a book. NaNoWriMo, and especially the appy-tool website thing, was a real advantage to setting a challenge and completing it and we recommend it to all budding writers. Then we talk editing and next steps, as well as Jen's problematic title (warning, there is a BIG swear in there).

There's also some chit chat about books we've loved recently, how Michelle Obama and Marc are practically twins and Marc's adventures into networking and being a start up. Then the real reason for the podcast - we work out what puddings and how many are appropriate for Christmas Dinner. What's the deal with trifle anyway?

Episode #27: PomoMARCHo! Setting Creative Goals

Join us for a little catch up episode where we check in on each other and how we’re doing, motivation-wise.

We can’t remember what number episode we’re on (is it any wonder with the amount of bonus episodes we’re knocking out?) but we are back to plot out our creative adventures.

Listen to us on
> iTunes
> Stitcher
> Spotify
> Acast

or right here...

We’ve come up against a strange sort of writer’s block when it comes down to finishing our book, so we talk through how writing letters from their characters has given us a push to get into the next phase of novel writing. We then set Jenni up on PomoMarcho where she’ll be writing 25 minutes a day for the rest of March in a bid to get lots of lovely words in. Marc will then use his holiday time, once he’s finished being all creative on his other projects, to take a look at our latest draft.

Will we achieve our Italian-sauce based goals? Will Jenni’s family get bored with constant pasta dinners?

Episode #24: Reading for Pleasure VS Reading for Challenge

Happy New Year from POW Podcast UK! This episode we’re talking about reading for pleasure versus reading as a task.

Following on from Jenni’s 2018 reading challenge against friend-of-the-show-Gemma’s husband Scott, Marc and Jenni discuss how the challenge went, how it affected Jenni’s love of reading and, crucially, WHO WON!

Listen to us on

> iTunes
> Stitcher
> Spotify
> Acast

or right here...

If you’re reading with one eye on the total, it really makes a difference about what and how you read. We discuss the choices that you make, as well as the books Jenni really enjoyed this year, which ones she read really quickly, and which ones she abandoned because they were just taking too long.

We also discuss the perfect environment for competitive reading, which may or may not involve a spa break paid for by Marc, and whether listening to an audio book counts as reading an actual book.

Also on the podcast:

  • Hot lovin’ with the band on the aeroplane on holiday in the shack
  • Approaching reading like eating, and getting your full range of nutrients
  • A lot of Harry Potter chat
  • The perils of listening to a podcast on 11/2 speed
  • How do you say Katniss?
  • Some more podcast recommendations including Off Menu, Homosapiens and Happy Place
  • Marc talks about one of inspirations and mentors Douglas Jeal

You can find out all the books Jenni read in 2018 on the official reading list page

And finally, we realise that we haven’t done any writing recently which is the point of this podcast. We need some help with ideas for writing challenges – can you help us?

Episode #23: All We Want for Christmas is... Books!

Marc and Jen are back to give you a run down of the best Christmas gifts for the readers and writers in your life.

Listen to us on

> iTunes
> Stitcher
> Spotify
> Acast

or right here...

It’s Chriiiiiiiiistmas! With jingle bells at the ready and a naughty elf, Marc and Jen either think about what other people would like (Marc) or just write down what they want (Jen). Along the way we ponder the trouble with goats and sheep, reminisce about the books we read as kids, confuse Albert with Abdul and reignite the Kindle debate.

Whether it’s a bestseller, something critically acclaimed or an off the wall choice, we’ve got a great selection should you need a last minute present. There’s still time, so make someone happy with a book specially chosen from the masters of procrastination.

On our wishlist this Christmas:
  1. The Liberty Faber Poerty Diary, with “poemy-poems”
  2. Dynasties: The Rise and Fall of Animal Families – David Attenborough
  3. Three Things About Elsie – Joanna Cannon
  4. The Spy Who Loved School Dinners – Pamela Butchart
  5. Becoming – Michelle Obama
  6. The Diary of a Bookseller – Shaun Bythell
  7. From Crook to Cook – Snoop Dogg
  8. One Enchanted Evening – Anton Du Beke
  9. A Boy Called Christmas – Matt Haig
  10. Love is Blind – William Boyd
  11. Taskmaster – Alex Horne
  12. Fire and Blood : 300 Years Before A Game of Thrones - George R R Martin
  13. Queen Victoria: Daughter, Wife, Mother, Widow – Lucy Worsley
  14. I Am The Seed That Grew The Tree: A Nature Poem for Every Day of the Year
And keep listening to the end for another INSPIRATIONAL quote, that was not found at the last minute by Jenni because she forgot, oh no…

Episode #18: Wellness for the Creative

Should you be striving for wellness as a creative? Despite the notorious anguished artist stereotype, we believe that you should look after yourself if you want to create amazing things.

Looking after yourself and making time for the self care is a priority, and we talk about how you can start to do that.

Listen to the episode on
or on Libsyn, right here...

We are all about the wellness this episode, appreciating and nurturing our bodies with l’eau mineral and pink Vimto.

We talk about what makes us feel good and how to integrate self care rituals into our everyday lives. Big shout out to Emma from Shine for her teaching and advice, which forms a big part of what we talk about.

We’re also caught up in the "Back to School" vibe, so we set ourselves some goals – personal, work, podcasting and more - to get us to the end of the year.

What else have we learnt this episode?

  • We’ve been doing POW of over a year now – wooo!
  • What is a Self Care Toolkit?
  • The wonders of a good bookshop
  • Our minor obsession with amusement park based games
  • Jenni’s struggles with anxiety over the last year
  • Fearne Cotton’s various mental health championing and products, including her Happy Place podcast and Happy Journal
  • Exciting tie in merch, like FRIENDS’ candles and Marc’s fave, The Shop That Must Not Be Named in York.
  • It’s worth taking a free book when you get given one, as Jenni reviews the very strange Rin, Tongue and Dorner

Don’t forget to visit Marc’s Etsy shop – he’s MarcoLooks on Facebook and Instagram.

Episode #15: Improving Your Character Development

In this episode we explore character development by looking at one of our characters in more detail – the lovely Darvin. We explore some popular and less well known ways to capture a personality that you are writing about, while drinking prosecco and gradually becoming more random (and slightly slurred).

You can find to our 15th episode here...

on iTunes
or Soundcloud
or now at Acast

or right here...

How can you approach character development? We look at techniques and tricks for getting an in depth feel for your character’s personality and background. This includes looking at things like online dating profiles, questionnaires, theme songs, family trees and loads more. Jenni and Marc chat about how all of these factors shape the character of our Darv and how it adds to the story.

We talk about the personality that Darvin projects, but also his inner life and how his achievements and disappointments have shaped him. Marc has done some great thought into Darvin's life, revealing some insights that really fill out what could be seen as a bit of a stereotypical character, and Jenni searched the internet for a bit to find some silly things to try.

What we’ve learnt this episode:
  • We are now on so many channels/apps/listening thingies! Find us on Stitcher and Player.fm.
  • The effect of prosecco – once you pop you can’t stop.
  • Writing a book based in the 90s is filled with problems, mainly related to TV programmes, films and other cultural bits.
  • Jenni’s son has super sonic hearing (he interrupts at about 3.40 after hearing us mention Pringles)
  • Puss-filled piercings of the 90s, and how hip and happening we were
  • Jenni is writing a play with the lovely Mandy (of Mud and Marriage fame)
  • The advantages and pitfalls of writing journals, including Fearne Cotton's Happy journal
  • We rant about the Royal Wedding and how we should care about the love and not about what people are wearing. Also how Amal Clooney is way more important than her husband.
  • Marc has met POSH SPICE!
  • Can you read 200 books a year? We question how many books the lovely Greg Jenner reads, and how long they are. We are clearly just jealous.
  • The song that Jenni was singing and Marc didn't know was Josh Wink - Higher State of Consciousness. We also sang Republica - Ready to Go, D and Blue (Dab a Dee) which is actually by Eiffel 65. And I Want Love by Elton John. And Pompeii by Bastille.  We are sorry if we ruined these songs for you.

Some links to character development tips and tricks

And the link for Emma's hypnotherapy and yoga site is Bristol Shine and so well worth having a look at - sign up for her courses and classes if you're in the area, and if you're not have a look at her great blog posts.

This episode is brought to you by prosecco!

Episode #13: Hamilton, Books and Puns...Oh My!

In this episode we talk about the books we've been enjoying recently, there are some terrible book puns, Jenni tries to give up her phone and Marc talks about his experience of Hamilton.

In a little catch up of what we've been up to, we cover exciting cultural things that we've experienced or are looking forward to, in this episode. Marc reviews his experience of Hamilton, from the odd ticket buying/theatre process to the actual emotion of seeing the "masterpiece", including the annoying superfans. Find out How To Break Up With Your Phone and if it works, as Jenni talks about Catherine Price's guide to giving up the evil technology and how it's affected her. Marc has decided that Claire Foy is much better than the Queen at being the actual Queen, and we talk a bit about historical dramas such as The Crown and The Darkest Hour...and Sing Street.
